AUBC Congratulates its World Championship Medalists

Chris Morgan created history on Saturday, as his historic win in the
Australian Mens Quad Sculls at the 2011 Rowing World Championships in
Bled, Slovenia.

In a day of records, this was Australia first ever title in this
category, and its best ever team performance at a Worlds.
Fellow Blacks Peta White and Renee Chatterton contributed to this
stellar effort, with their hard fought silver medal in the Australian
Womens Coxless Four adding to the 10 medals, including three golds.

Silver - Peta White & Renee Chatterton - Australian Womens Coxless Four
Freshly promoted to the Open ranks from the Australian Under 23 team,
Peta White and Renee Chatterton raced just after midday local time on
the stunning Lake Bled, in the Womens Coxless Fours.
The girls came through the 1000m in 3rd, half a second down on the
Netherlands, but then exploded in the 3rd 500m to be in 2nd place and
2 seconds ahead of them at the 1500m. They then began closing in on
the Americans, but they would hold on by less than one second, with
Blacks Peta, Renee and their crewmates Kate Hornsey and Pauline Frasca
claimed SILVER in style.

Gold - Chris Morgan - Australian Mens Coxless Quad Scull
15minutes later would see the A final of the Mens Coxless Quad Scull
get underway. The crew consisted of AUBC star Chris 'Walker' Morgan,
as well as Man of the Murray James McRae, Karsten Forsterling, and
stroked by Dan Noona. The top five crews had posted times within one
second of eachother in the semifinals - it was going to be a hot
contest.

The race got underway, and at the 1000m mark, less than 3 seconds
separated all crews, with the Aussies competing with the Germans for
the lead. The two crews unleashed attack after attack, with the
Germans managing to stay just a canvas up for the next 900m. In the
last 5 strokes, it seemed that the Germans would win by this margin,
but then in spectacular style, their 3 seat caught a crab on bow side!
With the German boat speed dropping rapidly, and the finish line only
metres away, the other three members kept rowing. The Australians
continued their charge to the line and grabbed GOLD by 0.25 of a
second!

This victory makes Chris Morgan back to back World Champion, after his
success in the Mens Coxed Pair last year, and is Murray Bridge athlete
James' third World Championship medal, after bronze in the same event
last year, and again in 2009 with Matt Bolt at the Under 23 Worlds,
also in the quad scull.

Congratulations!
